Arawana Group was recognised at the TDM Travel Trade Excellence Awards 2025, with the citation pointing at our smart-stay model.
That phrase gets used loosely across the industry, usually to mean a small room with a nice light fitting. It is worth explaining what we actually mean by it, because it is a real set of decisions about what to include and what to leave out, and knowing them tells you whether one of our Express properties is right for your trip.
It is also worth being clear about what a trade award does and does not tell you before you book anything.
The short version
- The TDM awards are judged within the travel industry, not calculated from guest scores.
- A trade award reflects industry standing. It says nothing about your room on your dates.
- Smart stay means spending on what every guest uses daily and skipping what is used once.
- The honest trade in an Express room is space, and it suits people who are out all day.
- The group runs four tiers because different trips need different products.
- Choose the district first. The award will still be there afterwards.
Before you book
Nine Arawana addresses across Bangkok and Pattaya. Reserve through us and the SMART rate applies automatically, with no booking fees and free cancellation on most rates.
What the award is, and what kind of signal it is
The TDM Travel Trade Excellence Awards are judged within the travel industry rather than aggregated from guest scores. That makes them a different kind of signal from a review average, and it is worth understanding the difference rather than treating every badge as interchangeable.
A trade award reflects how a business is regarded by the industry around it: operators, agents and the trade press. It says something about consistency, positioning and whether a company is doing what it claims to be doing across a portfolio.
What it explicitly does not measure is the condition of a specific room on your specific dates. For that, recent guest reviews of the individual property are far more useful than any award, including this one. We make the same point about our Booking.com Traveller Review Award, which is guest-generated and therefore a closer proxy, but still not a substitute for reading the recent reviews.
Good to know
- Judged within the travel industry, not by guests
- Reflects consistency and positioning across a portfolio
- Says nothing about your specific room on your dates
- Recent guest reviews remain the better check
What smart stay actually means
The idea behind the Express tier is that a compact, well-located room at a sensible rate is a product in its own right, rather than a compromised version of a bigger hotel. That distinction sounds like marketing and it drives real decisions.
It means spending on the things that get used every day by every guest: a location within a short walk of a train, a bed that is actually comfortable, water pressure, working WiFi, a lift, somewhere to leave luggage, and not spending on the things that are used once or never. A lobby you walk through in eight seconds. A restaurant that half the guests skip because they came to Bangkok to eat outside.
The honest trade is space. Express rooms are compact and we say so plainly rather than describing them as cosy. If you are out from morning to night, that is the right purchase. If you will be in the room for hours each day, it is not, and we would rather point you at a different property than take the booking.
Good to know
- Spend on what every guest uses daily
- Skip what is used once or never
- Location within a short walk of a train
- The trade is space, and we say so
Where each tier sits
There are four things in the group and they exist for different trips. Regency is the four-star tier, with pools, restaurants and the larger room types, including family and triple configurations. Express is the smart-stay tier: compact, well-placed, lighter rate.
Arawana Living is the long-stay product, with kitchenettes, aimed at the month-or-more trips that hotels serve badly. HOFT is the hostel on Silom, with dormitories and a private double, and it is our lowest rate anywhere.
The useful thing about running all four is that we can tell you when you have picked the wrong one. A guest booking three weeks into a compact Express room is a guest who will not enjoy week three, and it is a better outcome for everyone if that conversation happens before arrival rather than after.
Good to know
- Regency: four-star, pools, family rooms
- Express: compact, well-located, lighter rate
- Arawana Living: kitchenettes for long stays
- HOFT: the Silom hostel, lowest rate
If the award is why you are here
Start from the map rather than the trophy. Which district you sleep in will shape your trip far more than which badge is on the listing, particularly in Bangkok, where crossing the city can cost you forty minutes each way.
Affordable hotels in Bangkok is the one-minute chooser across our properties by trip type. Where to stay in Bangkok is the district-level guide, and it includes the four areas where we have nothing and you should book someone else.
Then check live dates on the property page itself. The award will still be there afterwards, and it is a much less interesting piece of information than whether the room you need is available on the nights you need it.
Good to know
- The district shapes the trip more than the badge
- Use the chooser, then the district guide
- We name the areas where we have nothing
- Check live dates on the property page
Awards are a checkpoint, not a product. The shift on the front desk tonight is the actual product, and it is the part we spend most of our time on. If the recognition brought you here, the most useful thing we can give you in return is a straight answer about which of our properties fits your trip, or whether one of them does at all. Start with Affordable hotels in Bangkok for the chooser, or Where to stay in Bangkok if you are still deciding on a neighbourhood.

Award categories and judging criteria are set by the organisers and change between years. This page describes what the recognition covered and how we would suggest weighing it, not a full account of the awards themselves.
