Arawana Express Chinatown

Smart-stay express in the heart of Bangkok Chinatown

Overview

Sleep in Chinatown, not a taxi ride from it

Arawana Express Chinatown sits in the middle of Bangkok's Chinatown, the working district for textiles, gifts, souvenirs and the gold shops, right next to MRT Wat Mangkon. Yaowarat Road and its street food are a walk away, which is the entire argument for staying here rather than commuting in from Sukhumvit.

Ratchawong Pier is close enough to make the Chao Phraya a genuine option for getting to the old town: the Grand Palace, Wat Arun and Wat Traimit are all easier by river than by road.

Entrance to the MRT station in Bangkok's Chinatown

MRT Wat Mangkon Station

The nearest metro stop, on Charoen Krung Road in the middle of Chinatown. The Blue Line from here plugs straight into the rest of the Bangkok rail network.

Walkable from the door.

Night street-food stalls and diners on Yaowarat Road in Bangkok's Chinatown

Yaowarat Road (Chinatown)

Chinatown's main artery, lined with gold shops, restaurants and old shophouses. After dark the pavement fills with grills and stools and it turns into the city's most famous street-food strip.

A few minutes on foot.

Songwat Road

A quieter riverside street one block off Yaowarat, lined with the old rice-trading warehouses and shophouses that built Chinatown's fortune. Several have reopened in recent years as small coffee roasters and galleries, so it reads as the neighbourhood's other side: the same district, minus the neon.

A short walk from the door, toward the river.

Incense burning in a Chinese temple courtyard in Bangkok's Chinatown

Wat Mangkon Kamalawat

Bangkok's largest Chinese Buddhist temple, built in 1872 and crowded with Taoist, Confucian and Buddhist shrines. Best in the incense-heavy early morning.

Around 250 metres from the MRT station, and an easy walk from here.

Passengers boarding a river boat at a Chao Phraya pier

Ratchawong Pier

The Chao Phraya Express Boat pier at the foot of Ratchawong Road. Take the river to the Grand Palace and Wat Arun and you skip the traffic entirely.

Walkable, or a quick ride if the heat has won.

A white and gold Thai temple hall raised on a terrace

Wat Traimit (Golden Buddha)

The world's largest solid-gold Buddha sits here, near the China Gate at the eastern edge of Chinatown.

About a kilometre away: walkable in the cool of the morning, a brief ride otherwise.
