Affordable hotels in Bangkok, sorted by trip type

Nalinee Boonmee, Guest Manager at Arawana GroupNalinee BoonmeeGuest Manager, Arawana Group November 10, 2025 4 min read

Most affordable-hotel lists sort by price and leave you to work out the rest. That is the wrong first filter for Bangkok, where a cheap room in the wrong pocket costs you an hour of traffic twice a day.

Sort by the trip instead. Below are the ten Arawana properties grouped by the kind of stay each one is built for, with what you give up at each rate.

The short version

  • Sort by trip type, not by price. A cheap room in the wrong pocket costs you an hour of traffic twice a day.
  • Count the Grabs before you compare rates. The neighbourhood is part of the bill in Bangkok.
  • Two or three nights on a first visit: the Sukhumvit corridor, near a BTS station.
  • Past about ten nights, a kitchenette beats a hotel room — ask about [Arawana Living](/arawanaliving/) or a Regency Park suite.
  • HOFT on Silom is the lowest rate and has private doubles as well as dorms, so a hostel does not have to mean a dorm.
  • Booking direct puts your requests in front of the desk that will actually check you in.

Before you book

Nine Arawana addresses across Bangkok and Pattaya. Reserve through us and the SMART rate applies automatically, with no booking fees and free cancellation on most rates.

Book NowSMART is our direct-booking code. Enter it at checkout on arawanagroup.com for our best available rate, with no booking fee and free cancellation on most rates.

Two or three nights, first visit

A short first visit wants the Sukhumvit corridor: the BTS runs through it, the malls and the food are on it, and most of what a first-timer wants to see is one train ride away.

Arawana Regency Park Sukhumvit is the 4-star option on Soi 22, with 15 room types and a pool that earns its keep in April. Arawana Express Sukhumvit 22 sits on the same soi at the Smart Stay rate: a compact, modern room, no pool, and the same walk to the BTS.

The honest difference is the pool and the room size. If you will be out from nine until late every day, Express is the better spend.

Good to know

  • Regency Park: pool + space
  • Express 22: same soi, lighter rate
  • Both walk to BTS

Count the Grabs

A cheaper room that needs a Grab each way to dinner is not cheaper. In Bangkok the neighbourhood is part of the bill.

Phrom Phong and Silom look more expensive on the calendar because they are. Count the trips you will not take before you chase a deal further out.

Good to know

  • Walkable beats a headline rate
  • Count the Grabs

A work week, or anything past ten nights

Past about a week, a hotel room starts working against you. You want somewhere to keep food, do laundry on a rhythm, and stop eating every meal out.

Arawana Regency Park Sukhumvit on Sukhumvit 43 is the Long Stay property: kitchenette rooms, 11 room types, and Phrom Phong close enough that errands stay on foot. Ask for long-stay pricing directly rather than booking nightly rates back to back, because the two are priced differently.

Arawana Express Sukhumvit 22 on Sukhumvit 41 is the shorter-stay neighbour if you only need a few nights in the same area. Arawana Regency Ratchada is the other working base: 65 rooms and a meeting room on Ratchadaphisek Road, a five-minute walk to MRT Sutthisan, booked by phone rather than online.

Good to know

  • Kitchenette rooms
  • Ask about long-stay rates
  • Errands on foot

Food first, or an old-town trip

If Yaowarat and the old town are the reason you came, sleeping in Sukhumvit means a long trip back every night with a full stomach.

Arawana Express Chinatown puts you inside the district instead, a walk from MRT Wat Mangkon and Yaowarat Road. It is loud and bright, which is the point. Take a room without a window if the rate matters more than the view, or one with a balcony if it does not.

Good to know

  • Walk to MRT Wat Mangkon
  • Yaowarat on foot
  • Window and no-window rates differ

Where to stay

Arawana Regency Park Sukhumvit

Sukhumvit 22, Bangkok120 rooms

If a first Bangkok visit is the trip, Regency Park and Express Sukhumvit 22 both sit on Soi 22, a few minutes from BTS Phrom Phong.

The tightest budget

Arawana HOFT Hostel on Silom is our lowest rate. It runs private doubles as well as 4, 6 and 8 bed dorms, so 'hostel' does not have to mean a shared room.

Silom is a business strip, which makes it quieter than Sukhumvit at the weekend and busier on a Tuesday morning. BTS Sala Daeng and MRT Silom are both close, and Lumphini Park is walkable.

Good to know

  • Private doubles available
  • BTS Sala Daeng / MRT Silom
  • Lumphini Park walkable

Adding the coast

Pattaya is a straightforward add-on to a Bangkok trip rather than a replacement for it, and the two ends of the bay are genuinely different.

North Pattaya is the calmer end: Arawana Regency North Pattaya is the 4-star there, with Arawana Express North Pattaya at the lighter rate nearby. South Pattaya sits closer to the noise and the nightlife, where Arawana Regency South Pattaya is about 2.7 km from Pattaya Beach with a pool and an on-site restaurant.

Book the two cities as separate reservations so each front desk has clean dates for your stay.

Good to know

  • North: calmer
  • South: closer to the nightlife
  • Book each city separately

How the direct rate actually works

Booking on arawanagroup.com with the code SMART is the direct rate. The useful part is that a direct booking puts you in contact with the property that will check you in, so late arrivals, twin beds, invoices and accessibility needs are handled by the people on the desk.

If you compare against an An external booking site such as Booking.com, Agoda, Expedia, Tripadvisor, Hotels.com or Trip.com., match the room type and the cancellation terms before you compare the number. A cheaper non-refundable rate on a different room type is not the same product. Stays of a week or more are priced differently from stacking nightly rates: ask before you hit book thirty times.

Good to know

  • Code SMART at checkout
  • Match room type before comparing
  • Ask for weekly or monthly rates

What the brand names actually mean

Regency is the 4-star tier: a full hotel with a pool and a restaurant. Express is the Smart Stay tier, a compact modern room in a location worth using. Arawana Living is the monthly-stay product, with kitchenettes for weeks and months. HOFT is the hostel.

Pick the neighbourhood for your days and the brand for your nights. Doing it in that order avoids the common mistake, which is paying for a lobby you will photograph once and then commuting past everything you came to see.

Good to know

  • Regency: 4-star
  • Express: Smart Stay
  • Arawana Living: weeks and months
  • HOFT: hostel

Planning your visit

Work out the walk to the station first
Before comparing rates, check how far each option is from a BTS or MRT entrance. In Bangkok that single number affects your trip more than almost anything inside the room, and it does not change when the rate does.
Book the room type, not just the hotel
Twins, triples, family rooms and connecting rooms sell out long before a property shows as full. If your trip depends on a specific configuration, secure that rather than assuming you can adjust later.
Match the tier to the length of stay
A compact Express room is the right purchase for three nights and the wrong one for three weeks. If the stay is long enough that you will be in the room during the day, move up a tier or ask about a monthly rate through Arawana Living.
Put your requests in the booking note
High floor, quiet side, late arrival, a cot, rooms on the same floor. All of these are straightforward weeks ahead and difficult on the afternoon itself. Booking direct gets that note to the right desk.
Split Bangkok and Pattaya as a bookend, not a swap
The coast is about two hours by road and works best as an add-on of two or three nights at the end. Do not plan it as a day trip, and do not travel on a Friday evening if you can avoid it.

Affordability in Bangkok is not really about the nightly rate, it is about how much the city charges you to get out of the room. Pick the district that matches your trip, check the walk to the nearest station, then choose the tier that suits how long you are staying. If you want the district-level thinking rather than the property list, Where to stay in Bangkok covers every area including the ones where we have nothing. If you already know it is Sukhumvit 22, the two options there are compared in Regency Park or Express 22.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

Which Arawana property is the cheapest?

HOFT Hostel on Silom, which runs dorm beds as well as private doubles. Among the hotels, the Express properties sit below the Regency ones, and the gap is mostly pool, room size and on-site restaurant rather than location quality.

Is it worth paying more for Regency over Express on the same street?

Only if you will use the pool or want the extra room space. Regency Park and Express Sukhumvit 22 are both on Sukhumvit 22 with the same walk to the BTS, so you are paying for the room and the facilities, not a better address.

Can I split a trip between Bangkok and Pattaya?

Yes, and it works better as two clean reservations than one. Make a separate booking per property so each front desk has your correct dates, and treat the coast as a two or three night block rather than a day trip.

How far in advance should I book?

For ordinary dates, a few weeks is comfortable. For Songkran, Chinese New Year, Christmas and New Year, book as soon as your dates are fixed: the room types people actually want, twins and quieter floors, go well before a property looks full.
